Momentum Issue #151

As summer draws to a close and students prepare for school or new experiences, ITS America has been diligently releasing important member resources and getting ready for the upcoming fall events. Take a moment to savor the pleasant weather, explore our recent reports, and learn about ITSA’s plans for the inaugural Policy Summit.

Over the last three weeks, we have launched numerous essential products on various subjects like Cybersecurity, AV Deployment, V2X, and more for our members. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our Committee members and the ITSA Team, we are delighted to present the following deliverables for our members.

Issue Brief on Cybersecurity:

This Cybersecurity brief explores the evolving nature of our transportation system’s cybersecurity needs and what challenges practitioners face in the field. Start by diving into the threats our systems face today, we look to spread awareness of cybersecurity best practices for connected transportation infrastructure projects and encourage continued collaboration among private sector technology developers, public sector technology deployers, and Federal security practitioners. This brief is a great read, and we have our ITS America Cybersecurity Community of Practice members John Contestabile, Paul Lennon, Christopher Lyons, and Rick Tiene to thank.

Public-Private Framework for Successful AV Deployment:

Public-private collaborations have the potential to maximize the benefits of automated vehicle (AV) deployment while reducing risks and improving the likelihood that the technology serves the needs of communities. Successful AV deployment can offer transformative opportunities to enhance safety, mobility, connectivity, and quality of life for communities, paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive transportation future. The ITS America Standing Committee on Automated Vehicles developed this document to provide considerations for engaging in successful partnerships and collaboration to support all potential partners, including technology developers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), operators interested in deploying AVs on public roads, and public agencies seeking to research and deploy AVs, as well as the communities in which they deploy. This Framework provides an overview on considerations related to establishing public-private collaboration, defining AV deployment success, planning and implementation from concept to deployment, conducting effective outreach and engagement, and reviewing lessons learned.

Beyond 5.9 V2X Deployment Plan:

This report provides an analysis of the current landscape and future outlook of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technologies outside of 5.9 GHz direct V2X. By examining the definitions, architectures, and functional deployments that comprise this “Beyond 5.9” ecosystem, this document provides insights and guidance for a broad array of stakeholders navigating the complexities of V2X deployment and adoption. The adoption of a diverse, multi-pronged approach to our V2X communications ecosystem will create a foundational baseline that will allow the U.S. to set the standard for creating more expansive, flexible, and interoperable V2X systems at scale. Through widespread V2X deployment, we can achieve improvements in roadway safety and make meaningful progress toward Vision Zero, while fostering a smarter and more efficient transportation system that is safer for all road users.

ITS Technology Use Case Library:

ITS America released in January 2024 the first ever ITS Use Case Library, with the goal of highlighting projects that are having tangible impacts on communities across the country. A couple weeks ago, we released volume two, featuring ten new use cases and a special section dedicated to AI-based deployments. We created this use case library for your use in conversations with federal policymakers, regulators, as well as the general public, to tell the ITS story and showcase our members’ accomplishments through a living document that will be regularly updated. With deployments from our members in both the private and public sector, this library showcases some of the best examples of using technology to make transportation safer, greener, and smarter for all.

Enjoy the rest of summer and take a moment if you haven’t already to read up on our latest deliverables. We have enjoyed the summer months preparing for these deliverables and presenting on them at events such as TRB ARTS 2024 in San Diego, CA.

Want to catch us in person? We are in full preparation for the first ever ITS America Policy Summit. The conference will take place September 11-12, 2024, in Washington, DC at K&L Gates. We have a great line-up of speakers going to discuss Surface Transportation Reauthorization Policy that places transportation technology on par with hard infrastructure, transforming the future of mobility through investments in Digital Infrastructure, unlocking the next frontier in transportation through Artificial Intelligence, saving lives, time and emissions through Connectivity and V2X Technology, and developing the transportation Workforce of the Future. We end the two-day event with in-person committee meetings on September 12th. Hear from industry leaders such as Dr. Robert Hampshire, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, U.S. Department of Transportation, Greg Winfree, Chief Executive Officer, Texas A&M Transportation Institute, Brian Cronin, Director, ITS Joint Program Office, U.S. DOT, Seleta Reynolds, Chief Innovation Officer, LA Metro, and many more.
