Transforming Roads: Unleashing Smart Technologies (TRUST) Project

In 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $19.2 million to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) to lead the Transforming Roads: Unleashing Smart Technologies (TRUST) project. In partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation, the cities of Houston and College Station, Missouri City, Fort Bend County and an international consortium of private-sector partners, the project is deploying connected vehicle (V2X) technology across a Texas mega-region to enhance safety, mobility and efficiency for millions of road users.
Spanning the Greater Houston area, the City of College Station and the corridors linking these regions, the TRUST project will enhance existing infrastructure and install new roadside equipment to enable the exchange of safety messages and communications. On Oct. 15, 2025, the Intelligent Transportation Society of America hosted the final webinar in its V2X Accelerator Deployment Concept Series, featuring TTI’s Robert Brydia. He shared insights into the planning and design of the TRUST project and how upcoming V2X use cases are addressing roadway safety and communication challenges between Bryan–College Station and Houston. Brydia discussed the project’s goals, performance measures and challenges being addressed at the deployment sites to inform scalable V2X implementation nationwide.
