As the nation’s leading advocate for the technological modernization of our transportation system, ITS America calls on policymakers and industry leaders to reimagine our understanding of transportation infrastructure to one which reflects the realities of the day and leverages new and emerging solutions. Our “Blueprint for Transportation Technology” serves as a foundational guide for the use of technology across the country that will improve the safety, efficiency, and resiliency of our transportation and infrastructure.

ITS America's AI Policy Principles

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to radically transform the capabilities of transportation planners and operators to utilize data to proactively enhance safety, efficiency, equity, resiliency, and sustainability. The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) has developed AI Policy Principles to help guide the regulation, development, and deployment of AI technologies and applications in our transportation system so that these new tools are used safely, transparently, and effectively in ways that provide net benefits to people and their communities and to build trust in these technologies to scale their adoption nationwide.

2026 Surface Transportation Reauthorization Policy Principles

ITS America has released its 2026 Surface Transportation Reauthorization Policy Principles, putting innovation at the forefront and calling for greater investment in transportation technology that will improve safety, efficiency, and mobility for the U.S. transportation system. In the next surface reauthorization, ITS America supports: (1) Integrating Digital Infrastructure into Federal Transportation Programs, (2) Providing Formula Funding for Transportation Technology, (3) Streamlining and Improving Technology Procurement.

Our focus is policy that accelerates the deployment of seamless mobility technology, connected and automated vehicle technologies, and smart infrastructure; policy that breathes new life into our transportation system by expanding investments in technologies that support smart communities; policy that encourages new models and modes of transportation, including micro-transit, ridesourcing, carshare, bikeshare, micro-mobility, and unmanned systems; and policy that does all of this while making our transportation system safer, greener, and smarter.

Technology evolves faster than we can imagine the future. Rapidly evolving transportation innovations are being developed and deployed that promise to entirely reshape the way our transportation network operates, facilitating vast improvements to transportation safety and overall mobility. The promise of these innovations is apparent, but the deployment and application of these technologies is not without challenges. While technology disrupts the transportation ecosystem with new innovations and ideas, government, communities, private companies, and researchers must race to catch up to and contend with ideas never thought possible. How do we accelerate change and safely embrace new technology while promoting collaboration across industry to advance shared societal goals?
