In this webinar, GRIDSMART will present a new approach for protecting bicyclists transiting through signalized intersections that is both safer and more efficient than existing stop-line methods. Rather than deciding "once and finally" at the stop-line, GRIDSMART uses computer vision and machine learning to track and classify bikes as they traverse the entire intersection, providing just enough clearance time for the individual bicyclist whether they move slowly or quickly.

With support from the U.S. DOE Energy Efficient Mobility Systems (EEMS) Program, an interdisciplinary team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is developing the Mobility Energy Productivity (MEP) metric. The intent of the MEP metric is primarily to track changes in mobility within a single city, location, or place over time. The metric can measure current levels of mobility at a specific location, and then test how various technological advancements, services (e.g. scooters, ride hailing, automated vehicles) and infrastructure.
