LOOKING AHEAD TO 2019
Happy New Year! We hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and had a chance to relax and recharge. At ITS America, we are looking forward to an action-packed year – one in which we will continue pushing forward in our mission of advancing the research and deployment of intelligent transportation technologies to save lives, improve mobility, promote sustainability and increase efficiency and productivity.
We are already in countdown mode for the 2019 ITS America Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, June 4-7. Registration for Intelligent Mobility: Safer. Greener. Smarter will open next month. #ITSDC2019’s Call for Papers and Sessions is still open, exhibit space is selling fast, and sponsorship opportunities abound. We have a number of exciting ancillary meetings and events, technical demonstrations, and tours planned during the conference as well.
In other event news, if you’re planning to attend TRB, please join us at our reception on January 15th at Clyde’s of Gallery Place (6 pm)!
One of our key 2019 priorities is the Mobility on Demand (MOD) Alliance. We have an exciting year planned, including a roundtable event on Capitol Hill at 12 noon on January 28th – details to follow soon, so please stay tuned. We will also share details for additional events throughout the year, including an event in April in Washington state as well as one in conjunction with the annual meeting in June.
This year’s executive forum series will kick off in early March with Urban Smart Mobility in New York – details will be coming soon, so please stay tuned! Plans are also in the works for a cyber forum in Washington, DC in September and a data forum in November in San Francisco.
On the advocacy front, our task forces have full agendas: continuing efforts to save the 5.9 GHz spectrum for transportation safety critical communications (V2X task force); developing recommendations related to reauthorization of the FAST Act (Smart Infrastructure task force) and maintaining our focus on strengthening cybersecurity for intelligent mobility moving forward with cyber-related work. The 116th Congress will likely face increased pressure to develop a policy for integrating automated vehicles into the nation’s transportation system, so the AV task force will continue to inform House and Senate transportation and technology committees on our automated vehicle policy.

Name: John Peracchio

Short Job description/Role Responsibility: Based in Detroit, Peracchio will be responsible for creating future business models and developing strategies that offer long-term growth for Conduent Transportation. He will use his knowledge of the industry to identify emerging innovations and technologies, as well as potentially disruptive practices, inside and outside the company, while seeking new business opportunities.
Current or previous #ITS Project: Member of the organizing committee for the ITS America 2018 Annual Meeting in Detroit.
Accomplishments: Since 2007, he has been a consultant providing strategic advice to businesses, investors and public entities. He also chairs the Michigan Council on Future Mobility, a 21-member advisory panel within the state’s Department of Transportation. The council advises the governor and Michigan Legislature on policies that will lead to the adoption of technologies associated with connected and highly automated vehicles, and enhancing personal mobility.
What’s the future of #ITS look like to you? Disruptive, with enormous opportunities to improve the experience of travelers across multiple modes.
First car you drove?: Chrysler Plymouth Horizon with a Volkswagen engine.
If you weren’t working in Transportation industry you would: work as an economist on Wall Street (where you can be like a weather forecaster and be wrong all the time without consequence).
Any other fun fact you would like to share? I am very active in the Navy League of the United States which supports the men and women who serve in the sea services: US Navy, Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, and US-flagged Merchant Marine.
