ITS America Statement on the Importance of V2X Technologies in Work Zones

As federal, state and local transportation agencies around the country call for increased attention to keep drivers and workers safe during Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) reiterates the importance of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies in keeping all road users safe in and around work zones. Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) technology alerts drivers to approaching work zones, allowing them to adjust their speed, and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) technology warns drivers of individuals’ presence in work zones, which could be outside drivers’ line of sight. When fully deployed, these technologies will significantly reduce work zone injuries and fatalities. In 2018, 754 people died in work zone crashes and more than 45,000 were injured.

Thanks to the Federal Highway Administration, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials, and the American Traffic Safety Services Association for heightening public awareness of work zone safety this and every year.
