United States Department of Transportation Releases Seminal Plan for Nationwide V2X Deployment

Washington, D.C. – Today, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) released a bold vision for the scaled, nationwide deployment of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technologies, outlining a clear and attainable roadmap for the adoption of these proven tools to improve transportation safety and mobility outcomes. The plan, titled “Saving Lives with Connectivity: A Plan to Accelerate V2X Deployment” is a testament to USDOT’s deep engagement with its partners in the public and private sectors to identify specific steps that stakeholders can take to meaningfully deploy V2X technologies at scale. These technologies allow vehicles to communicate real-time information directly with other vehicles, infrastructure, and vulnerable road users to improve transportation outcomes across the board. By preventing crashes and improving road safety, V2X technologies are uniquely capable of helping achieve the Vision Zero safety goals identified in USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy.

USDOT’s Plan recognizes that nationwide V2X deployment will not happen overnight, and that it will take coordinated, long-term engagement from both public agencies and private industry to deliver a nationwide V2X network. To that end, the Plan identifies straightforward short-, medium-, and long-term goals to coordinate collective deployment efforts. The Plan articulates distinct responsibilities among Federal agencies, infrastructure owner-operators, and private industry to achieve an interoperable V2X network across the nation. The Plan provides those stakeholders with vital information and a clear roadmap to accelerate V2X investment, research, and deployment to meet those respective responsibilities. Additionally, the Plan begins to define USDOT’s vision for how V2X applications outside of the 5.9 GHz band will fit into our National V2X Strategy – an important step in achieving interoperability among the various applications and approaches being deployed today that make up the larger V2X ecosystem.

“Today’s release of the V2X Deployment plan represents an significant milestone in the transportation sector’s journey to deliver a scaled, interoperable V2X network that will save lives and improve outcomes for road users across the country,” said ITS America President and CEO, Laura Chace. “USDOT’s enthusiastic support for V2X adoption provides clear guidance to stakeholders for continued V2X development, investment, and deployment. ITS America applauds the Department on the release of this critical roadmap, and would particularly like to thank the strong leadership of Secretary Buttigieg, the Federal Highway Administration, and the ITS Joint Program Office for their work in advancing innovation that will save lives.”
